how long have you been around?
well, me personally, i've been around since 1969. but that's not the answer you were looking for, right?
ashidome as my alter ego has been around since about 1993, when i chose it as my aol account name.
at the time i was taking martial arts and wanted a screenname that would label me as a fellow martial artist.
back then, "ashidome" was just another technique i had to learn.
cut to today, where i've long since left aol and opened a japanese dictionary. the name stuck and the new definition
seemed to fit even better.
as for the site, i registered the domain on july 27, 2001.

how did you come up with the idea?
i wanted to have a weblog with some actual content.
i'd been long impressed by the content provided by happyrobot
and by other sites, such as the fray. they tell stories in
a way that isn't exactly mundane and that don't feel like you're struggling through a 16 year old's diary.
this is a writing and design experiment. its also a self-expression experiment.
did i answer the question? i guess not, i tend to get off topic a lot.
i basically sat down and thought about a few of the things that i could share on a daily, weekly and
bi-weekly basis. that's how the sections were formed with more to be added if i feel like it.
i dreamt the design and when i woke up one thursday i sketched it out and then made the design in photoshop.

what sites helped?
media inspiration to get the creative juices flowing,
blogger and their list of sites for content ideas,
more crayons for palette help,
happyrobot for laughs,
istockphoto for images.
and prob a few dozen more you'll find here...

what fonts did you use?
the fonts used in the graphics are ITC Officina Serif and Dynomite. expect more type experiments as time goes on.

how does this site work?
i use an access database to store the content. i built a few cute admin pages that put my words
into the database whenever i feel like updating things. asp, vbscript and sql commands pretty much do the
rest.
i wrote all the pages using homesite, not a generator i hate code-generators.
i posted to my server using ws-ftp pro.
props to:

that calendar thing is cool, where can i get one?
that calendar was written by me and mike though
to be honest it was mainly mike's work that actually makes the thing go.
contact mike to find out more about how it works.

you mentioned this guy mike; did anyone else help you out?
matt, rich, taiwai, mike and i are all part of the happyrobot web development collective.
what a mouthful, hunh? it basically means that we work well together and
hook each other up as needed.

oops... something's broken on your site!
you can email me at broken@ashidome.com. tell me where it broke
and if you remember, what you were doing when it broke. sometimes my database and/or server act weird
so that info would help me troubleshoot.
