rest in peace, good hound
jake was a good hound. a dachsund who thought he was a vacuum cleaner, jakey loved to eat. jake would literally remove your finger to get at a dog treat... he was an overweight senior when he came to live with my friend melissa and her other hounds.

jakey was the sweetest dog i'd ever met. he was gentle, and would just come and curl up by you to be petted. he was incredibly good natured and he'd ignore the other dogs when they bothered him. the joke was that jake was "everybody's bitch" since even girl dogs would mount him. aside from food, nothing riled him.

god he was sweet. i can't even put into words how sweet. out of all of mel's dogs, he was my favorite because of his "i'm just here for the ride" attitude.

being an older dog, he developed a serious illness. (the name of which, unfortunately, escapes me at the moment.) melissa took him to the best vet hospitals, etc. but basically, his time was coming. when she got the news, she opted to care for him, instead of having him put down right then and there. she extended his life by years and she made sure that he lived the rest of his days out pain free and relatively happy.

in may, jake uncharacteristicallhy refused food. his blood sugar had dropped dangerously low and the vet told melissa that this was the beginning of the end for him. the plan was to watch the dog for seizures and when he did seize, melissa would have him put down at home. the vet agreed to the plan.

on friday, jake had a great day. he was out and strolling, sniffing everything in his path.

on saturday, he had a seizure.

melissa was in brooklyn and i had made plans earlier in the week to get together and have a play date with the dogs. she was going to bring murphy, molly, jakey and nina to visit maia.

instead, melissa called her old vet in queens. she took jake to be put to sleep.

mel and i got together for drinks on saturday night and said many good things about her boy.

rest in peace, jakey. you were a good dog and you will be missed by all those who knew and loved you.
