selfish
i have to admit to having become a selfish knitter as of late.
4 of the 5 projects i am currently working on are for me. i am currently making myself wrist warmers, a capelet, a shawl and a smoke ring. and when i say making, i mean that there is actual progress being made, though i have been blogging very little about my knitting progress. it boils down to not having the time or inclination as of late.
i toyed with the idea of sharing, step by step, the process i was using to design my capelet, but that would have cut into my actual knitting time. i took photos of my yarn stash to share but ended up reorganizing my projects and casting on a baby hat and another gift project.
i am knitting though i am not writing about it.
i will be tackling the vest and shawl again after i finish the capelet. i feel ready to again. i realize that i am a much better knitter than i thought i was. i can intuit things and have enough experience to know that yarnover increases work well for lace but not for a cabled vest. i am getting cocky and confident.
and i plan to share. just not just yest. maybe in a day or week.
right now, i have some knitting to get back to.

ridiculously early
i am up ridiculously early on a day off. my fingers itch to start new projects but my focus is on cleaning my inbox, filing bills, getting myself organized. still, my fair isle skirt calls. so do the garden shawl and mark's vest. they whisper start me, fix me, knit me. i shake my head and concentrate on the emails in front of me. over 1100 unread. that means i have 1100 things to do, the default being delete. still, there is stuff and stuff and stuff.
i'm operating on 3 hours of sleep and working through a cold. my mind turns to a baby hat for a new expecting co-worker. i can't decide on the color or whether or not i should order yarn. after all, i *DID* inventory all my yarn (and books and needles and magazines) and i know in my heart that i should have something appropriate. still, the itch is there. new projects galore!
i have cut down my WIPs and UFOs, though. i decided that some of WIPs were no longer of interest to me so i ripped them back and put the yarn and pattern away. i finished one or two minor UFOs.
i keep promising myself that this will be the year that i finish everything that i start. i'm sweating through my fever as i tell myself that no, 900 unread emails is not good enough. i need to slog through more before i can treat myself with yarn.

scarflets are done
the scarflets are done and i have decided to gift them to our dog walker. she loves our sweet maia and i thought they would make a nice gift considering that she walks our dog in ALL weather. we'll add a couple of bottles of wine and a year-end tip to the amount and i think that will make for a very nice gift. (pictures soon.)
the vest and shawl both need ripping back on a few rows and i haven't been able to eke the time out for the task. i hope to get to that by christmas at the very latest. it means that i will blow all my deadlines with these two projects but i really want the items to be as close to perfect as possible.
in lieu of these, i am working on "dainty bess" from the elizabeth i collection of scarves. i'm using knitpicks shimmer in maple leaf and while i'm not thrilled with the colorway, i am very happy with how the lace is developing. i
i can't easily read the charts on the subway -- too much balancing of papers or trying to hold onto a pole make things difficult -- so i've had to go back to an old standby of mine in order to charted patterns. i've copied each row of the pattern to an individual index card. the cards are punched at the top corner and held together with a single looseleaf ring. this gives me a compact and easily flippable pattern that doesn't annoy my fellow commuters and is far easier to access. it is working quite well for me and i'm making a few rows progress on this daily.
okay... it's 5:15 am and the shower calls! it's time to make the donuts...

ripping back
there is a part of me that dreads ripping back. i guess it's because it shows lack of progress. my shawl and mark's vest both require such "surgery" and i have yet to get to them.
instead i have been dreaming of what i could / should cast on for next. the skirt from interweave? a different shawl?
but i will be resolute. tonight there is no knit club but i will be covering the evening shift (until 8). i will drag in the shawl and a spare circular and rip to the lifeline. i will do the same with the vest front.
i have been dreading this but sometimes you need to back up in order to go forwards again.

new commute
it seems as though my new commute will afford me a LOT more knitting time. i don't want to say too much yet in case i jinx it but there is a real possibility of me knitting lace on the subway in days to come.

hats done / garden shawl woes
a quick update before i rush off to my first day at my new job: i finished both chemo caps. i am now waiting to get the mailing address for them.
i worked 10 rows on the garden shawl, each row getting progressively worse. i need to rip back to the lifeline but the thought does not upset me. i want it to be right, not sloppy.
more details later. gotta get dressed...
